Spaces Between
2018-
My cube represents the space between the living and the deceased. In everyday Singapore, it is not uncommon to see people burning offerings in metal bins. According to Chinese folklore over 2500 years ago, ancestors receive the burnt offerings in the afterlife and put them to use.
I interpreted this as ‘burning our love for the departed’, hence the heart. The hanging strings are a reference to the idiom ‘to tug at one’s heartstrings’, which means to elicit strong feelings of sympathy or fondness. I used contrast and rhythm in my design. There is a contrast between hard and soft materials of the bin and the heart it holds. Rhythm is present as patterns on the bin, and stitches on the heart.
